Big old jet airliner February 7

Big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay

I'm not sure why I like this shot so much. I stood outside, late afternoon, watching contrails from three nearly invisible jets streaking toward the west. Two weeks ago - sans camera, of course - I'd spotted eight contrails merging at a point in the horizon and wishing I hadn't left the camera at home. When I saw the commercial jet heading in the opposite direction, I took the shot and found the end result kind of appealing.

Nikon D70
1/500s f/11.0 at 70.0mm full exif

other sizes: small medium large auto

I like how that tree to the side, truly gives this image character, the detail of that plane who seems to be flying against the lines in the sky and the colors of this really gorgous sky.

cover the plane up. it becomes a much less dynamic photo then. Its a simple image, but no worse because of that.

There is a sense of composition that becomes more and more apparent as you continue looking at it. That and the abstract quality made by the mix of cloud and contrail make this, as you put it, appealing.

I think the appeal is in the color... the side frame of tree branches .. wispy clouds and the 3 contrails. I can envision the other two jets in staggered distance beyond the image.I like how the layers of clouds have a opposite diagonal sweep than the contrails. Nicely done
