I remember seeing many matinees at the two of the old-fashioned movie theaters
(with balconies and large curtains in front of the screen) that were located
downtown in the 1950s.

Yes, the Latchis. The Magnet burned down at least ten years ago, and most of the Latchis has been torn down, leaving only the front part shown in the photo. There is still a Latchis theater in Brattleboro Vermont (do a Google search), one of several once owned by the same family.
