Melanie, the bearded dragon eats veggies, mealworms and yes, crickets. We get about a hundred crickets a week from pet stores like Petco or Petsmart for 10 cents each. Thank you all for the comments. Sonny

Beautiful detail and clarity Sonny, thank you for your explanation. (So what DOES the bearded dragon eat?) And how are you finding crickets in winter? The surface almost looks like snow. --Melanie

Amazing capture - great job figuring out how to get the shot! That's sure an awful looking forked tongue.

Thanks for the all comments. Jim, to do this photo the cricket had to be slowed downed and this can be done by lowering its body temperature. The cricket was placed in a jar and the jar was placed outside for about 15 minutes. I live in Colorado and we have cold mornings here so this works fine. If you happen to live in a warmer climate and you don't mind cominggling insects with your food, the refrigerator would be excellent - try not to freeze the insect as it would look like Bernie in "Weekend with Bernie" movie. The 2nd part is make the dragon stick its tongue - this was done by spraying the insect with water. Our bearded dragon licks everything you spray water on. The rest is just timing. Just like the other cricket in "Prey", this cricket was set free in the garage where it can live the rest of its natural life. BTW, the white background is paper towel.

Wow! Great clarity and detail -- and I love the composition. (I'm beginning to feel sorry for these insects, and I don't even like them :-)). Helen

Sonny, this shot is certainly up close and personal...I really like how you captured the motion and texture of the tongue. The water droplets on the cricket are a neat touch too. Nice shot. MFC

... now you don't . (With apologies to Simon Bennett... but then electric lighting inside dragons hasn't been invented yet ;-)
Great stuff, Sonny; your family must get much joy out of this little guy. - Mike
