The Tower & The Gherkin

The Old Versus The New

This section of the Tower's exterior wall dates back to about 1300. The skyscraper at the right,
completed last year, is owned by the Swiss Reinsurance Company, but is known by all in London as simply
'the Gherkin' or sometimes 'the Erotic Gherkin' (I wonder why they call it that!). Actually, Swiss Re may be
in a bit of a pickle ... nearly a year after the building opened, the Gherkin is still less than 50% occupied.

I like how the photo shows the difference in building materials used in the 14th century versus
the early 21st century! I wonder if the Gherkin, like the Tower, will still be around 700 years from now!

Wow - I've never seen them together from that angle before. Great picture, the light's lovely.

Good contrast between old and new, I think I prefer the old!

Love the old/new contrast.

Simply wonderful,Jim. It's great to see the old and the new architectural styles and materials used in these structures. You have a great eye for architecture! A bow is in order!!

Great shot to get those two together! Now I'm off to look through my photos from my last trip. I know I shot a few of the Swiss building. But nothing this imaginative :-)
Certainly you must have been walking or perhaps riding in a cab and you just crossed the Tower Bridge?

Wonderful photo, Jim! Good eye for detail. We don't have anything like this in the United States so it's wonderful to see it through your eyes.

Great composition to emphasize the heavy massiveness of the old compared to the lightweight strength of the modern materials. Nice lighting too.

This is great Jim - the contrast of the two buildings is cleverly used. I love the Gherkin (and other Norman Foster designs).

good contrasts there. you'd need a rather large hamburger
to fit that gherkin.

warmer I meant

amazing comparison....what a world we live in! You found a great angle..... I bet the gerkin's a little warmed inside.....

That's what Prince C goes on about all the time - however, the Gherkin has a fascination all of it's own and here I think, it enhances the beauty of the Tower. Great shot. Chrish.

I love the colours and contrasts in this image. The 'gherkin' looks really alien to me, a space ship just coming down to land???

Very unique image Jim... the blend of period buildings is surprising. Nicely seen.

This is an extraordinary image. I love how you combined the old and the new in this picture. You have very nice tones in color in here as well. Very very well done.

This probably would have scared the crap out of Henry VIII. :)

Nice image Jim. and thanks for the info!

An interesting contrast of old and new. Nice of them to plonk a giant ghurkin right in the view of one of London's most famous buildings! :-)
