Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park. It was designated a dual World Heritage area (cultural and natural) for its important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.

Once we got to Tongariro we stopped for some pictures of Ngaruahoe rising above the plains. Our plan for the next day was to to the Tongariro Crossing with a side trip up this volcano.
