Sheep in Matukituki Valley

We also were surrounded by many sheep. A gazillion of them. Not only along the grassy flats, but high up on the mountain sides. I thought they would be tame, but they were pretty skittish and took off 'baa-ing' when we walked by. The lambs were about three months old and still had cute chubby lamb faces. Not so cute were lamb tails we randomly found along the trail. We later found out farmers remove lambs' tails to prevent infections and they either remove them with a hot iron or put a tight ring at the base that cuts off the circulation and eventually causes them to fall off. The latter was the reason we saw lambs' tails along the way.

On the day we hiked out we encountered a flock of sheep on the run (like groundhogs, they move faster than you think they can). When the lambs got separated from their moms, the played this marco polo game of baa-ing until they were reunited. Later down the trail we saw the reason for the sheep being on the move; a small pickup truck with at least a dozen collies on the flatbed or running along side. We watched the dogs do some herding and when the farmer yelled a short, stern command, they all immediately jumped on the flatbed and were quiet. I think if you have a lot of kids, a collie would be a good investment to keep track of them.
