1/21/05 - Forlorn Crosses

Gaithersburg, MD

Went out exploring today. We have a local Catholic church that was a forlorn country parish until urban sprawl sprawled around it. Legend even has it that a previous pastor was actually sent to this place as punishment for being a little too hip for his last bishop's taste. Ends up that his parish grew like topsy due to -- in equal parts -- the burgeoning area population and the fact that the people liked the idea of a hip priest. (He used to wear a black Izod sweater over his church collar -- honest to God.) I won't divulge his name, since all my information may be a lot of malarkey (except for the parish growth and the Izod sweater; That's first hand knowledge.) Anyway, the cemetary surrounding the chapel has some pretty old tombstones. I plan to come back when there's no snow on the ground (I didn't want to leave tracks) to take pictures of some of the inscriptions. In the meantime, I'll post some more shots from around the churchyard as I get a chance.

Love the perspective and the muted tones of the quite litte graveyard. I hope you get some more photos here...really a great scene. Good story to go with it :)

Nice picture and appropriately titled. Must be what's meant by "the cold, cold ground."

THe image with the crossed touches me deeply. I can not even describe in words how much. Maybe, because it is one day after my fathers death date. Very deep emotions evoked.
