Vulture Assay Office

Vulture Mine near Wickenburg

The Vulture may be the best of all Arizona's ghost towns and one of the state's richest lode mines. It also supplied bullion for the Union during the Civil War.
Nothing is restored but everything left in its original state over an extensive area. For a small fee you get a self-guided tour throughout the ruins.
Officially over $2.5 in gold was removed but unofficially it's believed to be much higher due to "high graded" (stolen) ore by the workers.
The Vulture did well into the 1890s. It ceased completely in 1942 when President Roosevelt ordered all non-strategic material production ceased due to the war effort.
Austrian Henery Wickenburg, discoverer of the Vulture Mine, committed suicide in 1904.
