Piper is named in honour of Piper James Richardson, the WWI hero from B.C. who played his bagpipes to
rally the troops at Regina Trench, on the Somme. For me this portrayal of mournful war juxtaposed with
the joy of a free community encourages reflection on the value of life, the essence of freedom, and the
depth of the human heart. Being a new father I am reminded that there is no love without sacrifice and
that the brave men and women who risked their lives for us deserve to be remembered and honoured.
