I tend to agree with both of your comments.

I wanted to document this flower and it's the shot I liked to most. Compositionally I'd rather the flower came out from between a couple leaves, but that's not how this plant works. There are also leaves in the way for almost any other angle so I didn't have much choice about the flower, itself.

The lighting could be much better, and I tried all sorts of variations, but only have one off camera flash. Besides the flash in the "setup" picture, I also used the umbrella on another tripod and tried to bounce my on camera flash into it, but it was hit-and-miss.

The background is bluer at the top because the wall is dark blue and reflected some of the flash back as a different color. I got lucky with the gradient, though it should be stronger and darker nearer the top.

The Nik Color Efex B/W Conversion plugin makes it very easy to adjust which colors are bright and dark, but without the flowers being white the whole thing was similar shades of gray, so I chose the higher-contrast white-flowers-dark-leaves look.

I like the colour version better..
the sepia is washed in the yellow area
This is a nice composition but I cant seem to find a focal point..
Is it at the top?

I liked you lighting setup , has a nice on the background
