The Noh-ren and the Wind
4th Place
Julian Hebbrecht

Kyoto - Gion

Noh-ren are the split curtains that hang in the doorways of Japanese shops and restaurants. The wind likes to play with them.
When the shop closes, the noh-ren is taken inside. The names or signs of the shops are printed on the noh-ren.

Modern-day Japan is of course quite different from the Memoires of a Geisha period. Fewer girls are inclined now to become Maiko and fewer men are willing to spend money on going to tea houses with geisha as well.
Thanks for visiting my galleries - new images are being added regularly.

Julian, thank you for the link to your photos. I've sent it on to a friend whose 11-year-old grandson is fascinated with Japan...wants to live there when he grows up. As expected, you have some beautiful photos. The geisha photos reminded me of a book I thoroughly enjoyed: "Memoirs of a Geisha." I don't know how accurately it relates to modern-day Japan, but you might find it interesting...or maybe it's so riddled with inaccuracies that it will make you angry. In any case, I'll be sure to visit your site again.

This is another fine shot and I feel it makes your entries a coherent set of three.

Thanks Mary Anne. On my pbase site there are several galleries about Japan - also one that shows lots of geisha shots with explanation.

Very effective shot, Julian. And please continue educating all of us about life in Japan.

I like this one, it almost doesn't look like a photo with a clean black background - it could be almost a painting or computer graphic. I like the sway of the wind on it too. And yet again I find I like it even more because Rod will appear shortly to comment on the frame :) If only you'd added some nice font/text to it as well we could all share Rod's pain!!!!
