Does anyone have any idea what this might be? It is the second one I have
found on my house...the first one I wasn't able to track because it was when
John was so sick...I will watch this one. It is very difficult to photograph
because of the background and because it is so cloudy. It is attached to the
house by two very thin web-like strings....it is wierd looking.....almost like
the bark of a tree or something. There is another view if you click on the
small photo below. Thanks!

It actually looked like some kind of wasps nest to me, but from what I can tell of the scale it is probably some sort of butterfly. I would have thought it might prefer a more natural setting, but maybe it appreciates a good sturdy house that won't blow it around in the wind. ?

With any luck you'll see a cool flutterby in the spring . . I had a few of these in a soft cage and had lots of fun freeing the butterflies after they came out =]

I had no idea it was a chrysalis...I looked it up and according to the book I have and Google, it is probably a Giant swallowtail....I will keep watching it. Mighty cold for
a butterfly though! Thanks so much.

Definitely a chrysalis (butterfly cocoon). I don't know what kind -- maybe some kind of swallowtail (spicebush?).

Yes. It looks like some form of cocoon, although I have no idea what the animal inside it might be.
