Portalloch slabs

Kilmartin, Scotland view map

Northwest coast of Scotland, near the Oban peninsula.

The cemetary at Kilmartin Church, Kilmartin contained an extensive and unique collection of medieval burial slabs. Decorated with figures of soldiers, celtic braids, circles, and other symbols, many were created for the Malcolm family. Kilmartin also was located near an area rich in historically significant Neolithic artifacts. About 500 AD, Pict tribes gathered near the Dunadd Hill Fort for the coronation of their King. A field of standing stones is part of a larger extensive prehistoric complex called Nether Largie, including the Ballymeanoch stone cairns and Templewood stone circles within several miles of each other.
