They do grow that way. I agree with you about the SEM look. As soon as I made it a black and white shot, that's immediately what struck me.

That is a very interesting subject. The symmetry of the cacti pinnacles is amazing. Do they grow naturally that way? Reminds me of an SEM image of prototype plasma TV field emitter tips.
