netting herring

Kotzebue, Alaska

The ice is very thick, probably three foot. Because of the storm there was overflow, water that is forced up through cracks in the ice by atmospheric pressure and tide. That water then freezes. The thin crust of ice is what one breaks through to get at the herring. The dog is mine. She's supposed to stay behind me when I'm taking pictures...but huskies have a mind of their own.
