Thanks Eric! My entomology professor would be disappointed in me, that was probably the class I missed. I see thiese quite frequently in my backyard around my pond and thought that they were some stage of dragonfly. I appreciate the response. I'll check out your photos.

This is a robber fly, family Asilidae. It is a species of Promachus, possibly P. hinei if it was really big:-) Looks like it killed a solitary bee of some kind.
