Ran out in the cold for a few minutes hoping for a nice sunrise (since it's supposed to snow later today I thought the old sailor's adage of "Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning" might apply). The pond was full of about 200 geese and one great blue heron - and the sky did turn red (sort of) for about ten minutes before going cold gray (fleeting opportunities is what it's all about). The heron was in a strolling mood and catching it framed by the foreground growth (instead of masked by it) got to be a challenge. I couldn't figure what the vertical reddish column in the sky was all about.
