allen lutins Surveying with Mayan workmen

Eager to learn of their cultural past, the Mayan workmen were most engaged in the work at hand...
It helped that allen was an astute student of Yucatec Maya language & culture....

Everything was experienced [by allen] from fishing in a boat with string & a hook to local drinking games to fund raiser dances in the town of Douglas. I was amazed at the way allen was able to associate and assimilate!

Too bad, this entire temple mound was bulldozed for construction fill in 2013, ruining the best site I ever had the pleasure to dig. The criminal who did it was fined all of $5000. The year I was there (1983), the same thing had just happened to a mound on the other side of the road from the site...thirty years and nothing has changed.

Pictured here (L-R) are John, the camp draughtsman, from Wales, a local worker whose name I don't recall, Florio, another local worker, and Allen. They are conducting the topo mapping of the Acropolis and the associated temple mound, in the winter of 1983. This may be the very day of the notorious giant purple wasp incident.
