Good Morning New Haven By: Don Lynch

At one time, 150 years ago, the docks were at the tall building near the center of the picture. Yale University Campus is pretty much everything to the right of the taller buildings.

Hi Don,

This is an excellent entry, and you pick also a great title. The effect of the morning light is great

This is like a good painting, the way the colors are working. A little noise reduction in NI or NN would help out a lot and enhance the painting effect in this case.

Very nice shot Don - terrific light and color. What I like best is the seamless "natural" blending of nature and man made.

Thanks for the comments. Now for a little geography of New Haven ;>). The entire town is surrounded by hills except for the South East which is Long Island Sound. There are two major hills that were named East Rock and West Rock (Neither are due East or West but close enough to get their names). West Rock has some historical significance. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, the British went looking for some of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Those who had to flee went and took refuge in the caves (named Judges Caves). West Rock is now closed to road traffic. It used to be a wonderful drive during the Fall. Now one can only hike its’ road. I used to train on my bike using this road but now it is full of potholes and broken bottles. In the past years, two young men have lost their lives climbing its’ steep walls. That’s one of the reasons why they have closed this park.

I took this shot from East Rock that is about 500 feet above the town. East Rock is a large park with hiking trails and a single road to its’ top. At the top, there is a monument to the sailors and soldiers and a pull over for cars to park. I was up there this morning setting up the shot before the sunrise. (It was quite cold this morning 29F with a strong wind that brought the temps down to the low 20s.) As you can see by the colors, the sunrise was a good one with a lots of red in it. (We are supposed to have a small snow storm tonight.. ya know red sky in the morning..) There are no leaves on the trees, the sun’s rays were just that red and strong. I also used a polarizer and a little USM in the PP which I think brought out the sun’s reflection/refraction a little more. If you look at the very top of the white houses you will see a glint of red also.

Hi Don, very nice shot, I like the light in the clouds. ..maybe I'm not seeing it right, but is that still foliage on the trees in December!?

Maybe a bit noisy, but I like it. Was it shot from a plane?
