Four quid

11 December 2004

235.
Struggling to come up with an idea for a photograph as I listen to R*****s win at the footie today (and sneak back up to top spot in the league - at least until tomorrow, when Celtic take on the mighty Dunfermline), in desperation I thrust my hand into my pocket and fished out all of my loose change. The princely sum of four pounds sterling emerged in the form of three one pound coins and two fifty-pence pieces. All of the pound coins were Welsh, and inscribed with the message "Pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad". I have absolutely no idea what that means, let alone have a clue as to how it is pronounced. The Scottish pound coins have "Nemo me impune lacessit" on them, which I believe means "no-one attacks me with impunity", which is, apparently, the motto of the Order of the Thistle, and was used on Scots coinage since the reign of James VI. The English pound coin is inscribed with the title of an Oasis album: "Standing on the shoulders of giants" - its meaning being a complete mystery to me. Like so many things. Well, whilst all of this trivia was running through my head, I decided that photographing coins is always a good standby: they make interesting subjects, and people from other countries have a fascination with coins that they may never actually see in real life, or, if they are planning a trip here, it lets them gain some familiarity with the coins they will be using. NEWSFLASH: Police have shot dead a sheep that was causing havoc in traffic. This was a headline on the Radio Scotland news just now!!! Obviously not in the Highlands!!! The Sportsound team have just come back on, and Richard Gordon (the presenter) has just offered his condolences to the sheep's family. Must be a slow news day!! What more can I say? I'm away to laugh uncontrollably. Honestly, you couldn't make it up!!

Scottish Cup 3rd Round Draw is live on radio as I type: Celtic are at home to Rangers on 8 January!

Welsh money, I thought you were in Scotland?? Seriously, I really like this, the harsh lighting works very well. Its the best coin pic that I have seen so far.

Excellent money shot; I use a 50 p. piece to screw in my tripod mount. Hope that's not a sacrilege (it fits like it was made to do the job). Goodness, was shooting the sheep absolutely necessary? Hope those officers will be able to sleep at night now (guess they'll have to come up with something else to count when trying to get to sleep). ;^)

Welsh is one of the most phonetic languages going .. Ply-deol we-v ee'm goolaad. It's from the Welsh National Anthem 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau/Land of my Fathers'; and it's impossible to translate other than to the rather anodyne... 'I will serve my country'. Careful you don't upset those sheep now.

A few years back it was decided we no longer needed 1 & 2 cent coins, but to this day everything is priced 98 & 99 cents etc & what your actually charged is rounded up or down so it then costs you 5 cents or 10 cents even * sigh *
I like your shots Stu.
ps...how's the head today ??

We US types are suffering from the exchange rate. An excellent job catching the coins so to speak.

Perhaps you didn't hear that--perhaps the tree trimming is still with you. Pretty coins.

Nice and sharp, Stewart. I'm not sure if there any Welsh PADers or not, but a Google search suggests that it means 'True am I to my country' which is also a line in their National Anthem.
Sorry, can't help with the pronounciation ;->

Nicely shot coins. I like Dominic's explanation.

Then again, I may be wrong (it has been known!).

Well my friend, I think the standing on the shoulder of giants quotation was from Sir Isaac Newton, who said "If I have seen further than you, it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants." in reference to his scientific achievement.
