5 december is the day the saint Nicholas is remembered in the Netherlands and Belgium.
He is better known as 'Sinterklaas' and he brings presents for the children.
This feast is accompanied with many types of food (mostly sweat), including characters ('letters') made of chocolate.

BTW. The Britisch and American Santa Claus is considered to be a weak derivate of Sinterklaas....
