26th November 2004 - tactile

I am a ‘touchy feely’ person as I’ve said before – it’s kind of strange because I don’t like people in my ‘personal’ space and hate it when people I don’t know well touch me but I really love things that feel good to the touch.

If I’m giving any thought whatsoever to the clothes I buy (which isn’t always the case) I buy on the basis of touch. I rub them on my face or lips and even if I don’t really like the colour or style of something I can be persuaded by its feel. When I’m relaxing and not thinking about what I’m doing, I will suddenly realise that I’m rubbing a little fold of the fabric of my skirt or top between my finger and thumb as I’m daydreaming.

Mike left a message on my pic from yesterday saying West wanted to know what David had bought on his shopping expedition. I responded by describing the feel of the clothes he’d bought (you know - velvety texture, silky feel etc etc) more than their look, colour or style. It made me chuckle when I read back what I’d written so I thought I’d write about it here in my diary.

So, I don’t know how typical I am in this, but for me denim just doesn’t work – it feels horrible. What feels good? Moleskin, gabardine, linen, finely woven cotton, suede and leather (even though I’m a veggie and it’s considered a heinous crime for veggies to like such things) things with tencel or cupro in them (I’m not slavish about natural fabrics even though on the whole prefer them).

Later tonight, when we are out, I will be able to lean across and fondle DM’s knee under the table in its new moleskin covering and get real pleasure both from the knee and, today for the first time, from the fabric too.

DM says this makes him look like Terry Wogan because terry is famous for his guests touching him on the knee......hhhmmmmm!

Great composition. I like the disembodied look of the hand. But I have to disagree on one point. Worn out denim feels wonderful. :)
