Most of the visible damage to the Parthenon happened in relatively modern times. In 1687, while Greece was occupied by the Ottoman Empire, the Ottoman Turks were at war with Venice. At the time, the Ottomans used the Parthenon as a storage facility for ammunition and gunpowder. The Venetians fired a cannon salvo at the Parthenon from the Saronic Gulf at Piraeus (probably 15 miles in a straight line). The cannonballs hit the Parthenon and blew away large sections of the north and south faces and destroyed the roof. I think they ought to restore it.
