This is my college class ring, which I've worn since I got it in 1968 or so. When I was married, it was on the other hand. This photo reminds me of something I heard when I was in the Navy. I had heard someone referred to as a "ring knocker". It turns out that is evidentally what Naval Academy graduates (and sometimes MIT graduates) are called by people (like me) who didn't go there. Each school has a very distinctive class ring design (esp. the MIT brass rat), so these folks have a habit of tapping their ring hand, say on a bar surface, so that people will hear the clink and notice the ring. My ring isn't all that distinctive (see http://www.pbase.com/dsteinauer/image/36680856), so I don't bother knocking it on bar tops. (Gotta remember to stroke, not pat, dogs and small children, though.)
