Brown pelicans can live up to 25 years.
Here in Cameron County, the Queen Isabella Causeway connects Port Islabel to South Padre Island. When first built there were many pelican/auto collisions. They found the pelicans didn't intentionally land on the causeway but were being stalled out whenever a northerly wind blew in. Unable to take off easily, they were being hit by autos. Now a PELICAN WARNING light system has been install on the causeway and whenever there's a pelican on the road, all traffic stops.
It's been a big success in saving this endangered bird.
