The USS LEXINGTON is the last of the WWII Essex Class aircraft carriers. After being decommissioned, the city of Corpus Christi bid to make this city with a proud naval history her final home port. She was brought here on 17 June 1992 and is supported entirely by donations, admission fees, and grants.
Nicknamed "Blue Ghost" by Tokyo Rose, the LEX was launched in Quincy, Massachusetts on 23 September 1942. She participated in every major battle from Tarawa to Tokyo and was hit twice by enemy fire. She was awarded 11 battle stars and a Presidential Citation for her service.
The LEX was the first carrier to welcome female crew members aboard.
She was recently named as an Historic Landmark and is truly an American treasure being cared for by the great folks of Corpus Christi.
