Alaca is the nearest city. I took a meal there and met these women, who work in the harvest that was going on, afterwards they would return to their hometown Adana.
There is a lot of discussion raging about the position of Muslim women. In Turkey and elsewhere in the Muslim world, but also in my Amsterdam, where a movie maker was murdered in November 2004, partly because he made a movie on the subject. I am struck by the large numbers of "emancipated" women I meet in Turkey, both in the villages and in the large cities. Some will wear scarves, others not, but the emancipatory function of having some job seems to be at work strongly. These women joked with me and with the proprietor of the restaurant, had a lot of fun amongst themselves, organised their own lives.
