The Citadel
by Helen Betts

Uçhisar, Kapadokya, Turkey

This is the citadel at Üçhisar, in Cappadocia, about three hours' drive from Ankara. It's a region of fantastic geological formations that are called fairy castles and chimneys. There are underground cities, Christian churches in rock, hotels located in formations, and more. A fascinating place. I had taken another view of this castle for a Challenge a while back.

Hi Hassan,

Well, they don't live in these particular structures any longer, but there are some that are still inhabited. In addition, numerous hotels have taken up residence in some of the rock dwellings, extremely expensive ones, as a matter of fact! See herehttp://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/30462895 for an example. In fact, there are 18 pics from this area in that gallery.

What an amazing place, you captured it beautifully, I love the way the path draws the eye in and the clouds echo the rock formations....Penelope

Impressive formations and a great use for them too... I hope to be able to visit someday. The landscape on your shot looks pretty nice, by showing a reduced sky area the shot gains a lot of depth and proportion. Well done! Carlos Ch.
