Smoking Porch...take 2*

Home, sweet home

I got in the habit of not smoking indoors a few years back...
I get to see this view a lot when it's raining and I "cheat" by smoking at the doorway :)

It's a 2 exposure sandwich exposed once for highlights
and a longer time exposure for shadows and light trails
then belnded together in PS using a layer mask.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
10s f/4.0 at 17.0mm iso100 (and 1/4s for the 2nd one) full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Ahh... such a typical Wet Coast sky... however, you've really managed to do it justice! I love the light trails in the background!

Cheers - Tracy!

Nice result. To me a combination of dark red with steely sky adds to a feeling of tension. Care to share exactly how you blended two images?

Interesting result from 2 exposures. How about cropping out a bit from the top and the right, so that the lights become more prominant? Very good everyday shot at night.

Excellent adjustment! Now my eye is drawn to the lights in the background then wanders the image and I'm able to appreciate the frame of reference.

Thank you very much Shu! You know what? I'd trade my Photshop knowledge in a minute for a better eye and the artistic sense that many of you exhibit in these challenges :)

(wistful) It must be nice to know soooooo much of the technical aspects of digital imagery. I really enjoy your work! shu

It's a rainy Saturday here in Vancouver and I do have too much time on my hands, so... just so I could say that I have used ImageReady at least once, I did an animated gif showing my first and 2nd versions.
CAUTION 1: the file is 700k
CAUTION 2: if you have the latest IE explorer version "Show Web Page Animations" will most likely be turned-off by default. It must enabled (Tools> Internet Options> Advanced) to see this or any other animated Gif file.

Ok... I redid the exposure blending taking more care this time to not let the longer exposure brighten the foreground... definitely more work painting on the mask but worth it I think. This is much more like what my eye's "dynamic range" shows me.

Cool effect when sandwiched. It looks like you live in a film studio! I can see the flash hitting "the wall with the painted sky". =) Good composition. /Jonas

Thank you Jeff... I think you're right. As a matter of fact when I finished doing the blending I thought to myself that it looked more like a slow-sync flash shot because of the bright foreground. I may just do some more work on it.

Well conceived and composed. *However, I think the foreground is too bright. It completely dominates the image.
