Yellow, Green, White and Red, Near Bridgeport, California, 2004

I composed this image out of color itself. By moving in to isolate the snow covered red and green bushes in my frame, and using background entirely of yellow leaves, I create not only seasonal contrasts, but color contrasts as well. The rich yellow, a primary color, provides a vibrant, incongruous context for the snow-covered bushes. It ironic that snow, the subject of this picture, provides the most neutral color in this composition. This photograph expresses seasonal change – the end of fall and the coming of winter – in the Eastern Sierra.

Thanks, Benchang, for the suggestion. I have reposted it, and cropped it slightly from the bottom to almost bring the yellow down to the lower left hand corner. I found that I needed just a touch of snow in that corner -- it creates a spot of tension where the yellow and the snow meet. Your suggestion has truly helped energize this image.

For this picture, Phil, I have a suggestion, how about we crop the snow a little bit to let the yellow to reach the left lower corner?

And there's the incongruity, Anna.

A most unusual sight (for me at least), to see snow and autumn leaves still on the trees. A picture suggesting that nature has gone wild.
