An Emperor, Bardo Museum

I don't recall which Roman emperor this marble sculpture represented, but I made this picture because I felt that the chips and weathered face gave these marble busts much more character. They speak more of the human side of these great figures, who had flaws like any other human. Its beaten face spoke of the huge stresses emperors faced trying to control an immense empire that extended over many different cultural and geographical boundaries. One in particular, Gordian 1 commited suicide just after 1 month in power.

The emperor in your Bardo photo is Lucius Verus (Lucio Vero) who was a co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius (Marco Aurelio). He is known to be something of a dandy, but in reality he was a very clever and sophisticated ruler. He put gold dust in his blond hair and you can see a hint of blue in his eye (even in your photo).
