I found these buttresses to be an unusual feature in mosques. In Jerba, mosques were semi-fortified and served as a place for refuge during times of war.
You isolate that part of the building that is most unique and express an idea with it. The buttresses appear to be little helpers, leading against their master, each lending everything it has to the effort. You use your vantage point to call attention to an ancient and effective form of structural support. While not incongruous, it is certainly abstract and expresses human values as well -- because we all can feel what these buttresses are doing here.
