Ouled El Hadef is the oldest part of Tozeur, dating back to the 14th century. The walls are high and windowless, promoting the privacy that the Quran prescribes. Although plain and straightforward to the casual observer, there are many details such as the unique brickwork and the palm-trunk ceilings under the archways that make the walk in these old quarters interesting. You would often see women in Tozeur dressed in a traditional black gown that is decorated by a blue or white stripe. Thick stripes are worn by married women, while thinner stripes are worn by single women.
