Rebuilding the beast

23 October 2004

186.
I am heartily sick of my computer's indefatigable and nauseabundo efforts to cause me grief, and am seriously considering sending it to the cuchillero to be taught a lesson. Today was a largely wasted day - which was a shame, because we had good weather. My only foray out of doors was to the computer store (again) and the supermarket (again). I know you are curious to know what went wrong this time. Well, let me tell you. Yesterday, not long after I had uploaded my photos, my computer suddenly rebooted - or rather, it tried to reboot, but couldn't get past the memory check screen without telling me that my hard-disk was about to fail. On pressing F1, the computer just rebooted. This went on for some time - I was desperate not to lose my data. I eventually got it runnning just long enough to save my important files to CD. So, today was spent installing a new hard-drive, then re-installing the OS (which involved a call to the Microsoft customer service centre in Bombay to reactivate my XP). The worst was reinstalling all of my software. It annoys me that 99.9 percent of the time you need to stay glued to the monitor just to click the continue button every 10 minutes. So, that has been my day. Stuck inside the house tickling the insides of my old PC, and trying to cajole it into behaving better in future. I have everything crossed that can be crossed... so here's hoping that this is it finally repaired.

My sympathies on the disagreeable sight in front of us. Strikes the chord to see the big sink hole on the side like that. Used to find it fun to tinker but since I built one from the ground up last spring, no more!

Very cool shot Stu. Nice to hear that you saved your important files.
Well, I am software engineer and work almost 12 hours a day with computers. As Larry said, I don't like them anymore.
I have to admit that I love programming. That is challenging for me, but being a freak for hardware and speed, well that is definitely not my thing!
Take care.
cheers

My PC is in pieces too, but I'm doing Hard drive upgrade before it fails :) You need to RAID your drives, buy a pair and mirror them, never rely on one HDD! hope you've not lost anything!

I make my living designing, writing and implementing complex software solutions for billion dollar business ... but I must admit I really don't like computers at all ...

I was just thinking of something similar - my hard drive on this machine is a pathetic 9gb. Which means that I need to constantly keep an eye on it. So looking at a new hard drive and a USB 2 (just in case I decide to buy an ipod - but don't tell the Missus!).

Good image, Stu! It conveys your feelings well. I have also been stuck to a computer most of the day.

Oh Stu, I feel your pain... the woes of computers. My world is Info. Tech. and I am forever cleaning and reinstalling something or other, these last few months have been the worst. I hope everything works fine on your computer once your through with the installs. Good job on the work quiz of yesterday. ;)
