Larry has written a book called The Show Makers: Great Directors of the American Musical Theatre
by Lawrence Thelen
Review of Larry's book, From Library Journal
Thelen, a published playwright and a director, here presents 12 of "the most creative and influential directors of the contemporary musical theatre." This is not a "how-to" book on play directing; it is a collection of Thelen's personal interviews with directors like Graciela Daniele, Harold Prince, Jerome Robbins, George C. Wolfe, and Jerry Zaks--all of which provide insight into the philosophies of these great directors and allow the reader to compare a variety of styles, influences, and approaches to musical theater. He begins with a general discussion of directorial approaches, then presents each director individually. The artists represented are not only "responsible for directing some of the most important and influential musicals of the 20th century but are literally directing the future of the American Musical." A delight for any student of musical theater, especially those who desire to direct. Highly recommended for public and academic theater collections.
