This is a special mother-son moment that I captured JUST the way I wanted it to look, by using the Lensbaby soft focus lens and a Nikon-made manual focus teleconverter and my Fuji S2 with a powerful electronic flash unit. This photo is very, very close to right off the CF card, and feels to me to be totally appropriate to the tender moment, the way it actually occured, with Spencer lovingly reaching out to touch Jill on the cheek and chin....it was just a wonderful moment. The fact that it will always be a soft-focus telephoto shot, and that this is not a Photoshop fake created after the fact, adds greatly to the photo's meaning to me. When I shoot a romanticized moment like this,if at all possible I want it to be authentic. I want my representation of the scene to have been temporally honest--not some afterthought, not some half-baked computer trick that I came up with later. I still want to do"real" photography, not photo-illustration.
