2004-09-30: Pick-me-up

Paris (1er), France

Paris has been gray lately, and I haven't had much time to photograph while the light is good. So today, I present a work of art by Thierry Bourbonnais and his team at Macéo, rue des Petits Champs, Paris (1er), just across the street from Le Grand Véfour. It is a tiramisù, which in Italian means "pick me up." This one was delicious! I've been trying to improve my macro photography.
P.S. Scaling and sharpening produced some odd artifacts that were not in the original photo. I probably won't fix them for this posting but I will watch out for them in the future!

Thanks for the compliment! I beg to differ on "tiramisù," though. Though lexicographers can err, the latest edition of the Petit Robert de la langue française gives the origin of tiramisu as: "it. tira mi su « remonte-moi » à cause des vertus roboratives du plat." That's exactly what "pick-me-up" means in colloquial English: a snack or, more often, an alcoholic drink that is used to regain force (se remonter) after a shock or exhaustion. Literally it would be "pull me up," but traduttore traditore !

Nice shot and presentation. Tira mi su means in Italian, pull me on it.
Like one would say, tira me su la borsa, what means pull me on the wallet.
So, not a good translation on the end for an excellent picture and, for sure, a very nice tasting plate and no reason not to pick it up. Tiramisu is a mixture of mascarpone cheese with egg yolks and sugar. You let it flow in a plate with inlays of biscuits that you soak in strong coffee and to that you add some almond liquor (amaretto). You keep in the deepfreezer for half an hour and serve it chilled with chocolate powder on top and some chocolate chips. Buon appetito.

A beautiful thing to be sure.
