Grand Prismatic

Yellowstone has numerous geothermal features due to its volcanic history and we saw a number of them during our day there. The Grand Prismatic is one of the most colorful hot springs due to the algae and bacteria around the edges where the water is cooler.

In the background you can see the dead trees remaining from the Yellowstone fire in 1988. We saw an in depth exhibit regarding the fire and it was interesting to read about the number of factors that converged to create the fire of a century and how the fire affected the landscape. Parts of the park looked pretty bleak where fires ravaged the trees and plants, but among the dead trees lodgepole pines are growing in quite thickly and we can imagine how the park will look different if we were to return in 20 years.
