There is nothing deadly on the amanita muscaria. The red colour of the head contains an alcaloid called muscarin. This is a strong halucinogenous poison and can lead to death if consumed in larger amounts. Recommended dose for a "trip" is a piece as big as your small finger-nail. The amanita is edible as long as you remove the red skin from the head at young state. In the snail holes, on this picture, one can see that the red pigment enters the flesh of the mushroom. Those coloured parts need to be removed and avoided only.
