Château d'Écouen: Tenture de David et Bethsabée

Écouen, Val-d'Oise (95), France

For visitors to my Favorites gallery: this photo is a detail from a magnificent series of ten tapestries of the David and Bethsheba story, at the National Museum of the Renaissance in Écouen, France. The tapestries were done in the sixteenth century. Here, court ladies gossip about the inappropriate attention that David is giving Bethsheba, wife of his trusted general Uriah, whom he has sent into battle to be killed. There are more shots from the series in my Ecouen gallery.

The photo was done in a dim room with a handheld camera; I then adjusted the color levels to get the maximum tonal range. The result is a bit jumpier than the original, and a bit yellower than it looks in its setting.
