Because I wanted to keep the shutter speeds as high as possible to shoot the fast moving ballerinas and because of the limitied available light, I didn't try any lower ISO settings than 800. The Canon 300 D however does not create much grain even at these higher settings, much less than the Canon 10D it seems.
Yes, the lens is pretty heavy and after three hours of shooting I really felt it in my left arm. A tripod would have need better for such long shooting sessions.
This lens is the best lens ever made by Canon. If you can get it cheaply second hand, do it.

Really interesting to see these images as I am thinking of buying this lens. Did you try any shots at lower ISO settings, i.e. 400? 1600 is very useful but always produces some grain which I am trying to avoid in indoor shots.
Did you find it hard to hand-hold the lens for the duration of the ballet?
