Water pythons are one of a number of species of Python occurring in the Top End of the Northern Territory. They can be easily
distinguished from other similar species by the bright yellow belly and the irridescent, rainbow-like sheen on their bodies.
Historically, these snakes have been an important source of food for Aboriginal people around Kakadu, as they grow to two
metres in length and occur in the wetlands where people spent a lot of time gathering food. This specimen was found in a small
sandstone gorge at the edge of a floodplain where it was photographed in situ. Although non-venomous, I have been bitten by
this species before and they are armed with a lot of very sharp teeth. Best not to get bitten..
