Carbide Miner's Lamps

Clipped to a miner's hardhat, these lamps were used to light a miner's way. Carbide and water were combined to create a gas, which was lit by the flint striker.

I was a miner from 1979 until four years ago when I accepted a surface job with the Henderson Mine in Colorado. Carbide lamps hold a special place in my heart even though I never used one. The hardships and history of those that did facinate me. Great image. Thank you.

I am a sucker for repeating pattern photos and this is no different, even the wood grain helps add to the flow of the pattern.

Beautiful rhythmic composition and such a nice color combination of the brass and the wood. Very pleasing.

Disagree with Lou. The DOF is great and the first is sufficiently in focus not to cause offense to the eye. The grain in the wood make nice leading lines, too.

Nice old mining lamps, You should have focused the first in row, but still a nice picture.
Those lamps had two functions indeed, they where normaly worn at waist level when moving in galleries to check for nitrox gas in mines. Lamps can not burn in any oxigen restricted environement and if those lamps where stopping it meant that this heavy gas was on the waistline and time to turn the back to this deadly danger commonly found in mines.

Nice colours. I like this, very different than what you normally do, but still very good!
