Unknown Bird

Caught him last night as I walked around Lake Murray.
He was wonderfullly patient with me, letting me try for several shots.
In the fading light, I finally used the on-board flash
(and hence the red-eye, I believe).

I'm wondering if anyone can identify this bird for me? He's between 12 and
16 inches in length, if that helps...

Fantastic capture -- what a cool shot! Although I must say it's a bit funny because for a water bird he looks like he's a little finicky about getting wet, just in the way he's very delicately leaning over and drinking. Maybe it's just my take on it, but it's a very neat pose either way.

Great timing!

OK...after some discussion and review of my bird identification books, I retract that this is a juvenile yellow crowned night heron; it's a juvenile black crowned night heron. The two are very similar, but the beaks are different and the feathers on the rump and the secondaries on the wing are different....this one is marked like the black crowned night heron...

Oops, forgot to say that the bird has a natural red eye...

Why Gary, that is the white-tipped water-dipping egret!
Nice catch.

I have no clue what bird this is, I hope you find out. I love the pose, so perfectly on top of that rock, taking a drink and can care less that your there, if it had seen me, it would have flown off, LOL. A wildlife photographer I am not.
