Trying to Fly
by Vikas
2nd Place

On India's Independence Day (August 15th, 2004), most kids and many adults fly kites throughout the day and have kite matches which results in many kites being cut off from their strings. Kids on the street have a field day looking for these kites and playing with them. Came across this little girl who had managed to find an abandoned kite and was playing with it, trying to make it fly.

Superb in every way. You've captured a piece of magic within the little girl.

Gorgeous image. I, on the other hand, love the B&W treatment.

I really like this, I just wish it was in colour. OK, I wish all photos were in colour.
Great capture of a special moment.

Vikas - absolutely wonderful! Love the story, the compositon and the b/w tonalities! Can't find anything to suggest, except that it exceeds the allowable 153600 bytes a teensy bit - will you please re-upload a slightly smaller version? --Olaf (helper appointed by the host)

I love the little story you posted, Vikas. Your sensitivity permeates your work. Shu

Thanks Roberta, Shu, Byron and Wonderstruck. Appreciate your comments.

For Wonderstruck, nope no string on top of the kite, this little girl was actually just swinging the kite around, pretty much swirling around with it and sometimes it would actually go 3 to 4 feet in the air and then come crashing down (at times on top of her) and she would giggle at that (and actually I would too, seeing her having the time of her life). Of course, since the kite was pretty mauled, you are correct, it will never fly again. :-) Regarding the lens, the jury is still out, will keep playing with it. Cheers and thanks.

Vikas.

Looks like you have started liking your 17-40L !!

Nice composition of light and dark

PS : Is there a little string visible right at the top of the kite, keeping it aloft ? It looks like that thing can never fly again without some help -- Wonderstruck

Vikas,
Superb! The composition is excellent (as always) with the repetition of the girl's shadow and the shadowed background. The girl, her shadow and the kite work well as three elements against three different values of light, medium and dark created by the stone/pavement. Then her natural expression really completes the image. Wonderful capture! Love the B&W too. Roberta
