August 12, 2004

Union Station.
I blew the highlights too much here to catch the torrential downpour, but when I didn't the interior was too dark.

did you shoot twice? maybe you could blend two exposures of the same thing to get the downpour outside?? But I agree with jypsee (as if I know what I'm talking about!) this is wysiwyg

I'm going to say again: your photo is what the eye sees. In a photo like this (reportage) the "look" is perfect....

A flash would have had a few drawbacks, here. It would have stopped the motion, and it would either have exposed the foreground well and left the background dark and the daylight okay, or it would have blown the foreground and kept the middle and "windows" okay. Underexposing to get the "windows" right and correcting the shadows in PS created too much noise. So this was about the best I could do.

Rain you say. I gather you spend a lot of time in Union Station. You must commute? Oh, for some rain here.

The caption is ok, Mark, but it is quite hard, even impossible, to get a correct exposure on both subjects. The difference in light between outside and inside is that big. So, if inside you have a correct exposure, the highlights from the arcades and all what is outside are burned anyway. This will probabely never change. The better way to do it is to shoot a flash on the inside scene, this will give a better chance to the outside scenes to stay within good limits, but then, the 1/8 of a second will not be possible.

This is an interesting capture of motion. Nice job catching the people nearest the camera in movement while keeping most of the remainder still.

I think this is a great shot! The motion is perfect for this shot. Thi reminds me of a classic photo of Grand Central Station, with commuters flowing in from one gate and several others also in motion. Really nice.

(What's a peep?)

I don't see any blownout highlights...it looks like what we see with our eyes. Looks natural. The movement in this photo is very well expressed. And the composition is great, especially the sort of "panel" effect.

Big Ups from the District, yo!

Did you hand hold this at 1/8? Impressive if you did. I was on a tripod this afternoon.

Nothing like an east coast humid day with a downpour...

LMAO! I'lll take the 60 degree and FOG anyday over this! Nice indoor lighting anyway! And I like the action of the peeps!
