A memorial to Bavaria's Field Marshals completed in 1844. Located on the Odeonplatz, it memorializes war leaders of the 30 Years War (1600s), the Naploeonic War period and others. The Feldherrnhalle was the site of the end of Hitler's "Beer Hall" Putsch in 1923 when Hitler and 2000 Nazi supporters attempted to march on the government and take power in Bavaria. They were stopped by police at the Feldherrhalle and 16 Nazis and 6 policemen were killed. Hitler was tried and sent to prison. During the 12 years of Nazi power in Germany, a shrine was erected at the Feldherrhalle and passersby were required to give the Nazi salute. (In a later picture, we will see an alternative route that people could take so that they would not be required to give the salute.)
