Tony Vargas (right of Charlie Smith) used to live in the tenement buildings before the Amsterdam Houses were built. His parents moved to this area as with many African-Americans from the turn of the century to the 1920's. Upon the contruction of the projects, his family moved to Harlem around 1943.
