Jump! by howard1

Lots of manipulation was used to salvage something out of this original. I started by running the original through Noise Ninja, as the subject was underexposed to avoid blowing out the sky, despite the use of a polarizer in the shot. Next came cropping to 6x4 aspect ratio and levelling the horizon. Next I retouched out the hydro wires in the background using the clone stamp. At this point I used the levels midpoint sliders on the individual colour channels to correct the colour of the subject and foreground, but I could not get an acceptable balance for the foreground that also made the sky blue, rather than cyan, so I made a selection of just the sky using the magic wand and adjusted its colour, as well as darkening it. Next, curves was applied to lower the contrast and bring out more detail in the horse and rider while keeping the sky from going light again. Finally, unsharp mask was applied to a duplicate layer, and then erased from the sky area. In fact, some Gaussian blur was applied to the sky selection to further reduce noise. I then resized for the web and applied a touch up unsharp mask after the resize.
