7th July 2004 - the girl with kaleidoscope eyes

Another complete flash of inspiration. Another hellishly difficult composition and another photo from my ‘smoke and mirrors’ theme, that I didn’t even realise was a theme until now.

I was sitting by the bed, feet up on the bedcover, idly munching my toast and marmalade this morning and I suddenly thought of it. The idea wasn’t fully formed then but it has developed during the day. I said to DM, who was tucked up in bed next to me, ‘where can I buy some small mirrors with no frames and he said ‘Homebase, get mirror tiles, why?’ So I popped into Homebase, got myself a small pack of mirror tiles and set up a kaleidoscope. I tried and tried to get my eye composed in the mirrors in a place that the camera would pick up the effect but to no avail so David suggested photographing my eye, printing it and then using the print to photograph.

He helped my by doing the eye shot and then I took this shot. I could have got the eye shot myself but the time it would have taken me to achieve on a night when it has taken me nearly two hours to get home from work seemed too great a price to pay for a PotD so I accepted his offer gratefully. He also held the studio light in the right place because it needed to be almost on ground level and the stands don’t go that low.

I don’t know why the idea popped into my head, it was just one of those lucky breaks. Funnily enough, I didn’t think of the song when I first thought of the image. It’s been nagging away at the back of my mind today all day, just below the surface until a few minutes ago, after I’d taken the picture……I now realise it’s ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ but it took me a while to get there. Ah well, here’s another for my songs gallery then, that’s a good bonus!

Clever Shot, but the bottom part look a bit gory!

Brilliant picture, but it makes me feel ill.
I hate anybody examining my eyes, especially the awful pressure test,
it may be only a little puff but it ain't no Graham Norton!
(We aren't very PC up North!)

Ewww! This one is totally weird for me and I think it's because it looks like eyeballs floating in space, which reminds me of biology class when I was at high school!

I love the wispy eyelashes and the mirrored eyes. I don't think it's spooky at all. Linda, that's how i get most of my photos... I either dream them.. or it comes to me when I'm lying in bed debating to get up or not.
Lets face it... dreams or not.. the bed is the best place to have "Brilliant" moments..lol
